In 2016, I inherited a rare 100 year old fortune deck by ML Hesse.

At the time I was working as a successful freelance hairstylist in New York City. My clients ranged from high level executives, reality stars, film sets, fashion week, magazine shoots and destination weddings. You can imagine my delight as my mother shared with me the history of this fortune deck. These cards, not only were deeply connected to my lineage but they seemed to have a natural affinity for the backstage dressing room!

This deck originally belonged to my Great Aunt Violet Schofield-Schroeder, a creative visionary ahead of her time, better known on the Mack Sennett Studio lot as Madame Violette. Violet was a trailblazing wardrobe designer during Hollywood’s Silent and Golden Era.

Her lavish designs for "The Sennet Bathing Beauties" not only appeared in fashion films of the production company but also later toured the country as racy publicity which certainly played a pivotal role in reshaping societal acceptance of women's swimwear. At the time, such attire had been deemed rather provocative and daring and was an obvious precursor to the flapper craze of the 1920’s.

However, Fashion trends weren’t the only predictions Madame Violette could attune to. Violet was highly sought after for her fortune telling abilities by the cast and crew members in her circle.

It wasn't long after these cards were in my possession that the deck seemingly awakened latent psychic talents within me. I had never encountered any type of deck prior to this but very quickly other types of decks started to make their way into my growing collection of Oracle and Tarot cards.

Understandably, I was a little trepidatious with this new ‘gift’ but I was determined to become more confident and proficient with my interpretations of the ‘energies I was perceiving’.
